I occurred to me recently that ‘Humans are highly programmable, based on their perception of reality’. I noticed this after I bought a very sweet cookie. I allowed myself to buy this cookie because I made a deal with myself that if I would be good and ‘save it until after tea’, I could buy it. But as soon as I stepped out of the hipster cookie shop, I had the thought ‘Ooo… I cannot resist this cookie at all!’ However, this was not the truth. I knew I could have saved it if I believed I could, If I wanted to enough. But I believed the lie that empowered me to finish it off in about two seconds flat! In therapy circles, this is what is known as… ‘the b***s*** we tell ourselves to allow us to continue our addiction’. I didn’t resist the cookie because of what I believe to be the reality or the truth of who I am and what I’m like. In that moment. I was weak-willed. Because I believed that, it became my reality.
